The future of UK manufacturing relies not only on cutting-edge technology but also on the skills, ambition, and fresh perspectives of the next generation. As the sector embraces automation and sustainability, apprenticeships have become a vital pathway for developing hands-on expertise and industry knowledge. By bridging the gap between education and employment, they are helping to future-proof the workforce, tackle critical skills shortages, and ensure that British manufacturing remains resilient, innovative, and globally competitive.
At GEETEE, investing in apprenticeships isn’t just about building skills—it’s about building people. The company’s success is rooted in delivering exceptional, hands-on service and maintaining trusted relationships with some of the world’s biggest brands. Developing future talent plays a crucial role in sustaining that reputation.
We sat down with GEETEE’s newest apprentice, Alfie Rose, to hear about his journey into the programme.
What inspired you to pursue an apprenticeship with GEETEE?
“I’m fortunate to have family and friends who work here, so I already knew about GEETEE, their reputation, and the kind of work they do. I knew I didn’t want to be stuck in an office and wanted something more hands-on, so it felt like the ideal fit.”
Can you tell us a bit about your background?
“I’m a local! I studied Carpentry at Nottingham College’s Basford campus, Hall College before enrolling on the Metal Fabricator course. Outside of work, I like catching up with friends and, of course, supporting my local team, Forest.”
How have you settled in so far?
“I was nervous on my first shift, but the team quickly helped me feel comfortable. I like having the time to get to grips with a process through repetition, and I’ve really enjoyed the banter and working across different teams.”
What does a typical day look like for you?
“I started with sanding down panels, but I’ve since been moving around the production floor and trying out different aspects of sign manufacturing, which I’ve really enjoyed.”
What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?
“I think it’s a great way to get into the industry you’re interested in. As long as you’ve got a good grasp of the basics, the rest will follow. And if you’re struggling, just ask!”
Where do you see yourself at the end of the programme?
“I want to become a metal fabricator. I enjoy the work and I’m especially looking forward to working on the drive-thru signage projects. I’ll be back at college in April to continue the course, get my accreditations, and hopefully join GEETEE full time.”
How would you describe the team and work environment?
“It’s very family-like, even if you don’t know anyone when you start. Everyone’s committed to doing a good job, but also to enjoying the work while they do it.”
What’s been your favourite thing about working here so far?
“It’s given me a really positive start to working life, and I’m learning a useful trade, one that I hope will give me a job for life.”
We also spoke with Operations Director, Darren Wombwell, about GEETEE’s approach to apprenticeships.
Why has GEETEE chosen to invest in apprenticeships?
“It’s vital for the industry, not just for GEETEE, that these skills are retained. Apprenticeships allow us to preserve and grow key skillsets, while shaping individuals to meet both our needs and those of our clients.”
Is this something the company has done before?
“Yes, and it’s worked well. In fact, we often see apprentices either stay on with us or return after time away. For us, investing in an apprentice is investing in the future of the business.”
And how is Alfie getting on so far?
“He’s settling in really well and has integrated with the team. It’s extremely rewarding to bring young people into the industry and watch them grow.”
Do apprentices have a place in your sector?
“Definitely. There’s a skills shortage across the industry that will only get worse if it’s not addressed. Apprenticeships are the best way to tackle that.”
“For us, it’s not just about filling roles, it’s about nurturing future expertise and safeguarding the skills that drive the industry forward.”
We’re delighted to welcome GEETEE as one of our valued employer partners.
Alfie will begin his journey with us in April, joining our newly launched Level 2 Engineering and Manufacturing Foundation Apprenticeship at our Ruddington campus. This programme is designed to give learners a strong grounding in core engineering principles, practical skills, and industry knowledge—providing the perfect springboard for progression.
“By completing this foundation apprenticeship, Alfie will gain the underpinning knowledge essential for success in the engineering sector. He’ll develop key competencies in areas such as health and safety, engineering techniques, and manufacturing processes, which will prepare him to confidently move on to the Level 3 Metal Fabrication Apprenticeship, where he’ll continue to build his expertise.
“This structured pathway ensures apprentices build solid foundations before specialising, helping them grow into skilled, capable professionals, ready to meet industry demands.
“At Nottingham College, we believe in creating clear, supportive routes into industry. We’re proud to be working in partnership with GEETEE to nurture future talent and help shape the skilled workforce that will drive UK manufacturing forward.”
